Gus Klofta

2024 - 2026

Bloomington local & O-Line staple for Black Sheep and Los Heros joins the Dad's.  Gus brings attitude & foundation, great for new-to-the-sport players.

Hello Mama?s family!

We're thrilled to share our newest Spotlight series highlighting our current coaches, up next: Gus Klofta.

Gus started coaching the Daddie!s in 2024 and has been with the team for the past 2 seasons.

2023 States Champions

Please tell us a bit about yourself. What do you do for work and for fun when not coaching?

For work I am an accountant for an electric utility co-op.  Outside of work I like to run, lift weights, hike, bike, and be outside as much as possible.  I have been playing ultimate on and off since high school but have been mostly off as of late since I tore my ACL in 2024 (after tearing the other in 2022, Bloomington Winter League strikes again).

How long have you been coaching and how did you find you wanted to be a coach?

This is my second year coaching the Daddie!s as I started last year with the 2024-2025 season.

I found I wanted to coach when there was a vacancy and had some feedback (and light pushing) from community players and past coaches to fill the role.

Why did you want to coach the IU Ultimate program?

Having been a part of the Bloomington ultimate scene as a player for over a decade, I was ready to step into a coaching role. Coaching was also an opportunity to still be connected and around ultimate and not risk further injury.  I also wanted to share my experience and help others get as much out of this sport as I have.

What's your role on the coaching staff? Do you focus more on offense or defense, team strategy, skill development, or something else?

As the Coach of the Hoosier Daddie!s,  I focus on the basics of ultimate including throwing form, decision making, defensive force, offensive schemes, and endzone schemes, etc.  My goal is to give players a baseline to understanding of the sport and leverage into their specific goals (having fun, being competitive, improving skills, making the Mama?s eventually, etc.).

What has been one of your favorite game day tournament memories since coaching with the team?

Always beating Purdue (especially at conferences last year).

What do you enjoy most about working with this current group of players? Any particular strengths or team qualities that make coaching fun?

The current group of players have a good mix of competitiveness and self-awareness.  They do a great job in giving their utmost while keeping a positive attitude.  Also, having the core veterans/returners, help with rookies and teach more by committee is what I appreciate and makes the job more fun and easy.  The group having a good sense of humor is also a bonus.

Post tournament fun at Portillos after a Los Heros tournament.

What has been one of your favorite non-tournament memories with the team? Hotel story? Eventful practice? Ran into a player at the bars?

I always appreciate hanging out at the hotel watching a garbage movie or borderline sports on ESPN 8 the ocho.

You spend a lot of time teaching the team. What have the Mamas / Daddie?s taught you?

Coaching has definitely helped me improve my public speaking, leadership, listening, and communication skills.  Also, the Daddie!s have taught me how to work in a large group towards a common goal in a leadership capacity.
